Cherry blossom season in Washington, DC

I didn’t realize Cherry Blossom Season was a thing until I moved to Maryland in 2016 for my dietetic internship. Not surprisingly, once I heard about it I was immediately obsessed. And apparently so are a lot of other people — so much so that there’s a legitimate website with a countdown, photos, and evaluation of how the season is going compared to past seasons. As I found out, it’s pretty hard to figure out the precise time to go because it depends largely on how severe a Winter we’re having and when Spring is finally coming. After almost missing the season altogether, I finally got a chance to go with my roommate at the time (Ysabel) and another dietetic intern (Paula) and it didn’t disappoint!

How to Get There

I always like to share how I actually got there because DC can be hard to navigate if you’ve never been before. We took the metro down to the Smithsonian and walked over to the Tidal Basin from there (because that’s where all the cherry blossoms are!). The closest station is Smithsonian (Orange, Silver, and Blue lines). If you’re on the Yellow or Green lines, L’Enfant Plaza is also close. You can also figure out when the National Cherry Blossom Festival is and go then.

What to Do

Once you’re at the Tidal Basin, you pretty much walk around and admire the cherry blossoms. The basin is decently big, so it does take about an hour (maybe more) to make it all the way around after you stop to take pictures or whatever you want to do. We took lots of pictures, so it took us an extra long time.

I would definitely put this on your list of things to do at least once in your life. The blossoms are beautiful and it’s nice to see so many people out enjoying the city.
